In 1981 TVR released the Tasmin, a Wedge shaped 2 door sports car. Production ended in 1988 with only 61 being produced. Of these, only 16 coupes were produced, along with
45 convertible versions. Before the release of the Tasmin, the popular M Series TVR
models were sold, leading to the company using these cars as a basis for the Tasmin series. The main differences were that the Tasmin was slightly longer and had a sturdier chassis. Two different versions of the car were released; the 280i and later, the 200i. The 280i was powered by the Ford Cologne
V6 engine which produced 160 brake horse power and had a capacity of
2.8 litres. TVR sourced the majority of the larger components for the Tasmin came from Ford, including the the gearboxes, suspension and brakes. TVR also carried out a first for the company and produced the one and only model of sports car with an automatic gearbox. The 280i had a top speed of 130 miles
per hour, with an acceleration of 0-60 mph of just less than 8 seconds.
With the automatic gearbox this increased to just over 8.2 seconds.
In addition to the 280i version, TVR released a model with a slightly smaller engine, known
as the 200i. This Tasmin was built around the Ford Pinto Straight-4 engine with a
2.0 litre capacity. The power from this engine was disappointing however, and with a 101 brake horse power, the car did not sell too well. The top speed of the 200i was 110 mph,
with an acceleration of 0-60 miles per hour of 9.0 seconds. The Tasmin
is infamously the last TVR to be sold in America, following a breakdown
in relationships with importers and rising insurance costs.
