TVR built the Tasmin between 1981 and 1988. During this period only 16 coupes were produced, along with 45 convertible versions. As a development from the popular M Series TVR models, the Tasmin was slightly longer and had a sturdier chassis. The first Tasmin to be produced, the 280i, was powered by the Ford Cologne V6 engine. This produced 160 brake horse power and had a capacity of 2.8 litres. Most of the components for the Tasmin came from Ford. For example, the gearboxes, suspension and steering came from the Ford Cortina and the brakes from the Ford Granada. TVR also included an automatic gearbox option for the Tasmin, the only TVR to offer this in the company’s history.
The 280i had a top speed of 130 miles per hour, with an acceleration of 0-60 mph of just less than 8 seconds. With the automatic gearbox this increased to just over 8.2 seconds. The Tasmin was also released by TVR with a slightly smaller engine, known as the 200i. This model included a Ford Pinto Straight-4 engine with a 2.0 litre capacity and produced a brake horse power of 101, which did not make a great selling point. The top speed of this TVR was 110 mph, with an acceleration of 0-60 miles per hour of 9.0 seconds. The Tasmin is infamously the last TVR to be sold in America, following a breakdown in relationships with importers and rising insurance costs.
