The S Series of TVR sports cars were
first seen at the NEC Motor Show in 1986. The car was certainly a hit
and production began within a year. An affordable price meant that many
people dreaming of a TVR could now afford one. The design was also
radically different to that of the Wedge cars that had saturated the
car market during the 1980s; a refreshing change for many car buyers.
The S Series was one of TVR’s most successful models, with over 2600
being produced. Production ran from 1986 until 1994. Many different
versions of the S Series were produced by TVR. Each time slight
modifications improved performance slightly and had some minor
aesthetic changes.
The first S Series from TVR was the S1, also
known as the 2.8S or 280S at the time. This S Series TVR was powered by
a Ford 2.8i engine. This car also included disk brakes at front and
drum brakes to the rear. 1989 saw the release of the S2 S Series from
TVR. There were minor trim improvements for this S Series, and
additional refinement to the wheel configurations to include OZ 7 spoke
alloys. The engine was changed to an improved the 2.9i Ford engine,
based on the one used in the Ford Sierra. The S3 S Series TVR was also
sold in 1989, with modifications to the doors. This allowed easier
access to the car, as wider doors were fitted. To do the, the chassis
was obviously changed, along with the dashboard. Following suggestions
from owners and enthusiasts, improved suspension was fitted and the
electric door mirrors ere improved. Another version of the S3 S Series
TVR was the S3C. That had a catalysed engine fitted that gave more
torque without reducing the power output. A limited slip differential
also cam as standard.
The last S Series car from TVR was the
S4C. Improvements included the introduction of disk brakes on both
front and rear wheels and a range of aesthetic refinements. Only a few
of these were released as TVR were also working on the limited edition
V8S for the series. This car gave a remarkable acceleration of 0-60
comes up in 4.7 seconds thanks to the 4.0 litre V8 powereplant from
Rover. This engine gave 240 brake horse power and was faster than many
of the supercars of the early 1990s.
