 TVR released the Grantura in 1958, introducing the world to their excellent range of British built sports cars. The Grantura combined high performance with a beautiful design, giving the perfect sports coupe for many. As what was to become tradition with TVR models, the Grantura was available with several different engine configurations, allowing the buyer to choose what we best for their needs. Engines for the TVR Grantura came from companies such as Ford, MGA and a Coventry Climax. Other components such as the brakes and suspension were supplied by Austin-Healey, Volkswagen and the British Motor Corporation. TVR began to use fibreglass in the Grantura to form the body. This had huge benefits as the weight of the car as low as possible, whilst maintaining strength and integrity of the car.
The Series 1 Grantura was produced by TVR between 1958 and 1960. This car was hailed a success, and approximately 100 were built and subsequently sold. The initial plans for the Grantura were to build it around the Coventry Climax engine, but to add a more powerful option TVR introduced a version powered by the 1.6 litre MGA B-series engine. This was the engine that was tested by The Motor magazine in 1961, which hailed the car as a good British sports car. The car had a top speed of just over 98 mph, with an acceleration of 0-60 mph of just 12 seconds.
TVR went on to develop and produce several more cars in the Grantura range. These included the Series II in 1960, which ran on the production lines until 1962. The Series II featured several slight modifications on the earlier design, including fitting new braking systems and improving steering. A variety of engines were again available for the Grantura, such as models from MGA and a Ford 1.3 litre engine. TVR produced around 400 of the TVR Series II Grantura. Until 1967, TVR continued to release several other models of the Grantura, such as the Series III, 1800S and Mark IV. These were produced up until 1967, with approximately 300 of these being made. Changes to these cars included a longer chassis, stiffer suspension. This chassis was used later by TVR as the basis for development of the new M Series of sports cars.
