The TVR Grantura was the first in a long line of exceptional cars from TVR. First seen on the roads I 1958, the Grantura attracted a great deal of interest. With this car TVR had designed both an attractive and well built sports coupe that combined beautiful design and strong British engineering. To build the Grantura, TVR used components from a range of other automotive manufacturers. The brakes for example came from Austin-Healey, VW Beetle suspension and rear axles from the British Motor Corporation. The body of the Grantura was created from fibreglass to give strength without weight that would have affected the performance of the car. The Grantura came with a variety of engines, including models from Ford, MGA and a Coventry Climax.
Series 1 TVR Grantura was built between 1958 and 1960, with approximately 100 of the cars being produced. This model of TVR was designed around the Coventry Climax, but many other engines were also used. One of these included a Grantura with a 1.6 litre MGA B-series engine. This was tested by the well known motoring magazine The Motor, which found the TVR to have a top speed of just over 98 mph, with an acceleration of 0-60 mph of just 12 seconds.
Series II models were released in 1960 by TVR and production ran until 1962. Modifications included fitting new braking systems and improving steering. Again, a variety of engines were available for the Grantura, including the MGA and a Ford 1.3 litre engine. Approximately 400 of the TVR Grantura Series II were produced. Further models were released up until 1967, with around 300 new cars rolling of the production line. These cars were longer in design and gave stiffer suspension. The new chassis was later used for inspiration for the new M Series cars that followed this model.
