TVR are experts in producing lightweight sports cars, and the Cerbera is a great example. Named after the beast that guarded the entrance to Hades in the Greek legend, the Cerbera was unveiled at the Birmingham Motor Show in 1994, and was produced between 1996 and 2003. The car was produced under the leadership of owner Peter Wheeler and was innovative for TVR as it featured many firsts for the company. The TVR Cerbera was the first hard-top and the first 2+2 coupe. In addition to this, the Cerbera was the first car to be produced under Wheeler that was driven by a TVR engine, rather than one purchased from manufacturers such as Ford, Triumph and Rover.
Before designing the Cerbera, TVR had purchased a long line of engines from other manufacturers. Due to the sale of Rover, their supplier at the time of designing the Cerbera, TVR decided to build their own, in-house engines. With the help of a race engineer, TVR designed a 75-degree V8 with a flat-plane crank. This new engine from TVR offered 360 horse-power from the 4.2 L V8. A larger 4.5 litre engine was later produced, offering 420 hp.
As the first 2+2 car for the company, the Cerbera was still light and nimble, attracting buyers from far and wide. TVR managed to keep the weight to approximately 1100 kg. the TVR Cerbera also had many design chances compared to typical cars. The steering wheel had only 2 spars compared to the usual 3, allowing the driver to see all of the dials and instruments clearly, as there were several located around the steering wheel. A unique and beautiful dashboard was also designed for the Cerbera, adding to the list of aesthetical attractions to the car in addition to the performance and exceptional engineering. The smooth, clean lines of the car made it a celebrated model from the Wheeler era. In 2006 ‘The Last Cerbera’ was sold at auction by TVR owner and chairman Nikolay Smolenski for 45,000.
