The term Carerra has been used by Porsche of a number of their sport cars in tribute to the success of the company at the Carerra Pananericana race. The name has been used for nearly every Porsche developed, including the Porsche 356, 904 and 924. Porsche have also lent the name Carerra to the famous 911 series, with a Carerra being named in each model type. The Carerra often refers to the base model for each Porsche type.
The GT was initially designed to run on a tubocharged flat-six engine like many predecessors, but due to FIA regulation changes Porsche opted for the V10 engine that offered capacities of up to 5.7 litres. This Porsche v10 offered 612 horse power giving a maximum official speed of 205 mph. This Carerra came with a traditional manual 6 speed gearbox unlike rivals which offered a computer driven paddle shift option.
Many modern technologies are utilised by the Carerra GT including a carbon fibre monocoque and the latest carbon fibre-reinforced Silicon Carbide ceramic composite brakes. Automatic rear spoilers can also be found, that automatically deploys at speeds over 70 mph. Such advancements in sports car technology have led to over 75 technological patent requests being filed during the production of the Porsche Carerra GT.
