The Porsche 996 is an internal company name for a model of the Porsche 911, in this case those that were produced between 1998 and 2005. The Porsche 996 name is used now that the vehicle has left production in order to seperate it from both newer and older versions of the 911. The Porsche 996 was significant in that a number of design changes were implemented in its development that have helped shape the 911 in its current form, such as the introduction of a new, reliable water cooled engine that vastly reduced noise and improved the performance of the vehicle, the cries of naysayers and detractors who argued that a water cooled 911 would never be reliable enough were soon drowned out by the throaty growl from the Porsche 996 as it just kept going, and going, and going, and demonstrated a far higher reliability record than was previously thought possible.
 The Porsche 996 was produced initially as both a cabriolet and a coupe and it quickly became very popular with car enthusiasts around the globe as it marked a new chapter in the evolution of the ever popular 911 that by now had attained something of a legendary status. There were various options available for the Porsche 996 including a choice of rear wheel drive or four wheel drive, a 3.6 litre twin turbocharged engine producing 415 bhp or a more economical 3.4 litre engine producing 300 bhp.
The "911 for the Millennium" was produced in 2000 and was a model 996 Porsche, it featured a sublimely beautiful violet chromaflair paint scheme and an interior completed in dark burr maple for the ultimate in exquisite luxury. All of these Porsche 996 versions can be recognised by their limited edition number plate that is mounted on the centre of each console, and the unique 911 badge sitting on the engine cover. This version of the Porsche 996 is highly sought after as it was offered with a choice of six speed manual or fully automatic gearboxes.
