The Porsche 964 is the internal name for a unique model of the Porsche 911 that was the first generation of the 911 to include four wheel drive. The 964 was produced between 1989 and 1993 and was given the designation of either as the Carrera 2 or the Carrera 4 but is known in the motor community as the 964 in order to identify it in the sea of 911 models and others given the allocation of Carrera. The first car available included the AWD Carrera 4s, and in 1990 Porsche introduced the rear wheel drive model and labelled it the Carrera 2.
The 964 is famously the first of the 911 models to be available with the Porsche Tiptronic automatic gearbox. The 964 also initiated several changes in the unique styling of the 911, including the integrated bumpers and change in the front end layout of the car. The Porsche 964 offered sleek racing lines coupled with a stripped interior to reduce weight; that lack of luxuries such as air conditioning, a stereo and sound dampening allowed owners to enjoy the stunning engineering of the vehicle rather than use internal luxury.
There were a range of different versions of the Porsche 964 available. The options included a coupe, cabriolet or with a Targa roof system. This Porsche is remembered as the unfortunate end of the Targa roof on 911s as it was later to be replaced with a glass roofing system that is found on the 993. This increased the demand for the Porsche 964 and it is now a very sought after model of the 911. Improvements in the engine were also included in later models, such as a 3.6 litre engine coupled with improved stiffer suspension. The Carrera RS was also produced for the European market which featured a lightweight rear-wheel drive system.
