Porsche 944 Waterproof Half Cover
The Porsche 944 was built from 1982 to 1991 and it was designed to replace the 924 as the companies entry level model, however 924 production actually continued until 1988. The Porsche 944 design was supposed to continue to last well into the 1990's however almost all of the revisions that were planned for the line ended up being utilised in the 968 instead. Both the Porsche 944 coupe and the cabriolet sold very well and provided the company with a solid income stream.
Originally the Porsche 924 was designed to be an Audi project designed under contract, however when VW/Audi abandoned the project Porsche opted to purchase the 944 design as a replacement for their 912 and 914 series of vehicles. The 944 was launched to excellent reviews thanks to its excellent handling, however there were some shortcomings with the 2 L Audi engine so Porsche decided to implement a turbocharged 924 that increased performance but also increased price. Like the 911 the Porsche 924 went through a large number of versions with varying specifications all based on the same basic design.
The Porsche 944 was launched with a 2.5 L straight 4 engine that was chosen both for fuel efficiency and also for size as it had to be fitted from below whilst on the production line. By 1985 the Porsche 944 was due a series of upgrades; these involved replacing the dash and door panels with new designs, embedding the radio aerial so it did not project from the vehicle, upgrading the alternator, increasing the oil sump capacity, adding a larger fuel tank, changing the stereo system, upgrading the wheels, and adding the option of heated or powered seats. In 1989 Porsche upgraded the 944 engine replacing it was a 2.7 L version which offered a major torque increase along with a smaller increase in
horsepower.
