From 1982 through until 1991 the Porsche 944 was a major part of the companies line-up, replacing the earlier and ever popular 924 as an entry level car. Ironically the 924 proved to be so popular that production continued alongside the 944 until 1988, and the Porsche 944 was supposed to continue well on though the 1990's however Porsche changed tack and opted to incorporate many of the advances in technology, styling and design in a brand new car, the 968 that would go on to replace the 944 almost totally. The Porsche 944 was offered as both a cabriolet and a coupe from the outset and both models sold very well cementing the vehicles reputation in the annals of car history and more importantly providing yet another source of much needed income for Porsche to continue to develop more expensive models such as the 911.

porsche9441.jpgInitially the 944 hit the roads fitted with a standard 2.5 litre straight 4 that was selected thanks to its excellent fuel efficiency and for its compact size. One of the unique design quirks of the Porsche 944 was that on the production line the engines had to the mounted from underneath the vehicle so it was vital to choose an engine that was small enough to be handled safely when working from underneath the car. In 1985 the Porsche 944 was updated with a new dash and door panels, a new aerial that was incorporated into the chassis, a stronger alternator, a larger oil sump, a bigger fuel tank, better stereo and some new wheels. One year later Porsche opted to give the 944 a new engine with a capacity of 2.7 litres. This proved very popular with drivers as although it only offered a small increase in horsepower it offered a very large torque boost.

The Porsche 944 was designed from the outset as a replacement for the 912 and 914 series, and when it was first launched it received a host of excellent reviews who praised the excellent handling and responsiveness of the car. The original Audi engine proved somewhat problematic in production prompting Porsche to quickly release a turbocharged version of the 925 that increased both the performance and the price of the vehicle. Both versions are now popular with collectors and enthusiasts and many can still be found in roadworthy condition.
