Porsche 924 Waterproof Half Cover

The Porsche 924 was produced in Germany from 1976 through to 1988 and marked something of a departure from traditional Porsche stylings and designs. It was referred to as a 2+2 coupe due to the fact that the rear seats were not considered "full size" and space in the rear was at a premium. The Porsche 924 was developed to replace the 914 and serve as a new entry level model. It was also the first Porsche to be powered by a watercooled engine that was front mounted, and while a front engine rear wheel drive setup was the norm for many other manufacturers it was unusual for Porsche.
The 924 was unveiled in 1975 and was an immediate success that helped provide a much needed source of income for the company who were struggling at the time, and the 924 is also directly responsible for funding further development of the 911. Even though the Porsche 924 was was replaced by the 944 in 1983-1985 it continued on for many years after this as it was so popular. The reason the car looks so different from anything Porsche had produced in the past is that it was initially comissioned by Volkswagen to be designed by Porsche, however the 1973 oil crisis forced Volkswagen to scrap their plans and Porsche saw the opportunity to market the vehicle as their own. Various sources have stated that the deal made between the two manufacturers was anything between 100 million and 160 million DM, ironically far less than VW paid Porsche to design what would later become the 924.
The 924 went through various iterations in its life, and when 1977 saw the introduction of a catalytic conveter the power of the car was increased as smog reducing equipment that used power from the engine could be removed. Initially only a four speed manual version of the Porsche 924 was available however an Audi three speed automatic gearbox was offered in 1977. By 1979 a five speed transmission was fitted to the 924 however the layout of the gears proved difficult to use so a normal H pattern Audi five speed was fitted in 1980. The distinctive unique shape of the Porsche 924 assured that it would continue to be a success for many years with surprisingly little changing with regards to the styling over the cars life, in fact the 924 was described by Excellence magazine as "the best handling Porsche in stock form." Sadly the unique 924 is now very hard to find, but there are still some in the hands of collectors so they have not yet vanished from our roads completely.
