Introduced to the world in 1975 the Porsche 924 become an overnight hit and provided the struggling company with some much needed income. As with many cars produced by Porsche, the 924 provided the income that supported the development of the iconic 911 into the car that is loved by the world of motoring today. Porsche developed the 924 along with Volkswagen, leading to the somewhat unique design that sets it apart from any other vehicle by Porsche. The oil crisis of 1973 led to Volkswagen pulling out of the deal, giving Porsche the opportunity to produce the car as their own.

The 924 was produced for over 12 years and was finally discontinued in 1988. Marketed as a 2+2 coupe due to the smaller size of the two rear-seats, the rear of the 924 was known for limited in space. The 924 became the entry-level Porsche available at the time and boasted new innovations such as a water-cooled engine to increase performance. The Porsche 924 also featured a front mounted engine, unusual for Porsche, whilst the vehicle was rear-wheel drive.

Several versions of the 924 appeared throughout its lifetime. The introduction of the catalytic converter in 1977 boosted performance thanks to the removal of smog reducing technology from the engine itself. A range of gearbox options were available including a four-speed manual, an Audi three speed automatic gearbox and by 1979and followed by a 5 speed transmission in 1980. Collectors will search high and wide for this spectacular sports car, but with few on the road they are sadly disappearing from the enthusiasts’ circuit.
