Porsche 924 Heavy duty Waterproof Car Cover

The Porsche 924 was first revealed to an eager press and public in 1975 and it proved to be successful immediately unlike many of Porsches other models; once again it proved to be a much needed source of funds to allow the company to develop and refine other models and lines, especially the 911. The Porsche 924 is unique amongst Porsches in that it was replaced by the 944 in 1983 but it continued to be produced for years after this as it proved very popular with the public. The unique stylings of the 924 attracted many non Porsche afficionados to the brand, ironically the design was comissioned by VW however the oil crisis in the mid 1970's forced a change of plan and Porsche took over full development of the 924 and produced it as their own model of Porsche. It is undersood that VW actually paid a lot less to Porsche for the designing of the 924 than the reported figure of between 100 million and 160 million DM that Porsche paid VW to continue producing the car!

porsche9241.jpgThe Porsche 924 was produced from 1976 to 1988 in Germany and it was marketed as a "2+2 coupe" due to the fact that the seats situated in the rear of the vehicle could in no way, shape or form be considered a "normal" back seat arrangement. Porsche developed the 924 from the initial VW design to serve as a new entry level vehicle, replacing the 914. The 924 also holds the accolade of being the first Porsche that featured a front mounted, watercooled powerplant mated to a rear wheel drive setup, the norm for many companies but unusual for Porsche. The distinctive shape of the 924 has cemented its place in the history books and it was actually described by Excellence magazine as "the best handling Porsche in stock form."

The 924 continued to be refined and developed throughout its life, based on both customer demand and expectations and also the changing political climate as people became more aware of the impact cars could be having on the environment. Porsche fitted a catalytic conveter to the 924 in 1977, not only did this allow the vehicle to comply with new emissions standards but it had the unexpected side effect of increasing the power of the vehicle as a lot of the smog reducing equipment could be removed. The gearbox of the Porsche 924 proved problematic at times, with the early four speed manual version being offered alongside an Audi built three speed autmatic in 1977. A five speed manual gearbox was also trialled in 1979 but the layout of the gears was illogical so this was replaced by a standard five speed Audi gearbox in 1980.
