The Porsche 912 was created to fill the entry level niche between 1965 and 1969. It was attractive to many thanks to its excellent fuel consumption (up to 36 miles per gallon) and the fact that it boasted four full seats in a low drag chassis. Initially the Porsche 912 outsold the 911 model that provided a handy source of income for Porsche to continue developing the 911 into what has become their most popular model.
Initially after the 356 was discontinued in 1965 Porsche were left selling just the expensive 911, hence the creation of the entry level more affordable 912. It shared the same chassis with the 911 but the 912 used a smaller, more economical engine and reducing the standard features on the vehicle. The first five year production run of the Porsche 912 sold a massive 30,000 units and they were so popular many police forces across europe utilised them as pursuit vehicles.
Gradually as the 911 range expanded to include the cheaper 911T executives felt that the time for the Porsche 912 had passed and it was discontinued in 1970 to be replaced by the 914, a far cheaper vehicle to produce thanks to modern manufacturing techniques. After a six year absence from the roads Porsche took the step to re-release the 912 in a new E model to serve as a stop gap between the 914 and the 924 as the latter was still being developed.
To keep costs down Porsche used a 2.0 L engine from Volkswagen, and 2099 of this version were produced exclusively for the US market. The 912 was very popular as a racing and rally car, and rally kits were produced that included anti-roll bars, better brake pads and a dead pedal rest. It was a Porsche 912 driven by Sobieslaw Zasada that won the European Rally Championship for touring cars in 1967.
