Porsche 912 Lightweight Breathable Car Cover
Once the iconic 356 was discontinued in 1965 Porsche were only producing the high end and rather expensive 911 and desperately needed an affordable yet performing car to replace such a desirable and attainable vehicle. The production of the entry level Porsche 912 heralded the re-entry of Porsche into the entry-level market and continued to produce the 912 for nearly 5 years. During this time an incredible 30,000 vehicles were sold with particular interest from many police forces around Europe. This economical yet performing car proved very poplar and is now highly sought after by collectors.
With an economical and smaller engine, the Porsche 912 shared several design features with the luxury 911. By sharing the same chassis with the 911, production costs were kept low helping Porsche to pass on this saving to their customers. With an impressive 4 full seats the car also met the needs of a much wider market, aiding its success throughout Europe. Initially outselling the 911, the 912 provided extra income to support Porsche in the development of the 911 into the simply stunning vehicle that we see today.
Cost saving was a major drive in the production of the Porsche 912. Parts were shared between a range of other cars including the 2.0 litre engine from Volkswagen. 2099 of the Porsche 912 were produced primarily for the US market. The 912 also celebrated popularity within the world of rally racing, and with the introduction of rally kits for the 912 it was able to compete at a high standard with other production cars from around the world. The crowning glory of the Porsche 912 was winning the European Rally Championship for touring cars in 1967.
