Porsche 356 Waterproof Half Cover
The Porsche 356 is a stylish icon loved by many and also Porsche's first full production car. It is lightweight and offers excellent handling thanks to its rear wheel drive and short stature. The Porsche 356 was available in both hardtop and softtop configurations with the convertible models being very much sought after by collectors, particularly those produced around the time when the Porsche 356 was first created in 1948.
The first production run was for just 50 cars, however production continued right through until 1965, even beating initial sales of the Porsche 911 when it was released in 1963. The amount of this unique little car still on the road stands testament to how durable the original 356 design is; it is estimated that of a total production run of almost 76,000 356 cars half are still road worthy.
The original model Porsche 356 was powered by a four cylinder air cooled engine mounted in the rear quite like the Volkswagen Beetle (which was designed by Ferdinand Porsche senior), in fact the first roadworthy version contained a number of Volkswagen parts to help keep manufacturing costs low. Once the car began to sell well Porsche decided to further refine their 356 design to turn it into the stylish, luxurious, sporty performance vehicle that we know and love, and by the 1950's very few parts were shared by Porsche and Volkswagen.
Earlier models were created with an aluminium chassis crafted by hand, however later models were made from steel after production moved from Austria to Germany.
