The Porsche 356 is a classic iconic vehicle that has graced the roads since its creation back in 1948. The Porsche 356 stood head and shoulders above the competition because it was so light and handled so well due to the utilisation of rear wheel drive, something of a rarity in the 1940's. The Porsche 356 also came in both hard and soft top options so no matter where you lived or where your interests lay you could purchase this vehicle and be sure that it would be perfect for everything from everyday use to weekend driving with the top down.

porsche3562.jpgThe first Porsche 356 featured a stunningly smooth four cylinder engine that was air cooled and mounted in the rear of the car (whilst this is seen as a sporty innovation in modern times remember that it was the Volkswagen Beetle, another car designed by Ferdinand Porsche, that pioneered this mounting method). The relationship between Volkswagen and Porsche went so deep that the 356 actually contained a large amount of VW parts that were used as a means to keep ever spiralling costs under control. The company quickly saw that with the 356 they had a potential classic on their hands so refined their designs and made the vehicle more luxurious and the Porsche 356 that we all know and love was born.

It is worth noting that while the earlier production runs of the Porsche 356 was built from a lovingly hand crafted aluminuim chassis those that followed were constructed from good old fashioned steel when the company moved their main production lines from Germany to neighbouring Austria. Only 50 of these cars were produced at first but they proved to be so popular that Porsche continued making more and more until 1965, making the 356 one of the most popular Porsche's of all time even continuing to beat the 911 model at sales when it was released in 1963. The tough little 356 is incredibly durable and tough; of a total manufacturing amount of 76,000 vehicles it is believed that almost half of this figure are still being driven every day by loving owners around the world.
