The Mazda Xedos is regarded by some as an unsuccessful foray into the executive car market however many owners of the vehicle remember them with great fondness and henceforth the car has attained something of a cult status. 1992 saw the introduction of the first Mazda Xedos to compete directly with the BMW 3 series, the new vehicle from Mazda was similar in many respects such as size and engine power.
The Xedos was offered with a choice of a 24 valve V6 that was capable of producing 144 brake horse power and also a smaller 16 valve 107 horse power version that was marketed at the more economically minded driver. By 1994 Mazda realised that the Xedos was not proving to be a huge success so they redesigned it slightly to make it more ecologically suitable and also redesigned the exterior in order to re-launch it.
The Eunos 500 version of the Mazda Xedos was only offered for sale in Japan, and it was never launched in the US. Mazda released the larger Xedos 9 in 1994 in order to compete with the BMW 5 series. Even another major redesign in 1998 could not save the Xedos and they stopped producing it in 2000 although many are still driven by collectors and enthusiasts who find them excellent cars to drive.
