1992 saw the creation of the very rare and unique Mazda Xedos, a vehicle designed to sit neatly into the market of "executive transport". The first version of the Mazda Xedos entered production and came straight into competition with the BMW 3 series, it was similar in both size and performance to its competitor.
Mazda produced two different types of engine for the Xedos. The first was a 24 valve V6 of 144 horsepower for those who desired more power. Mazda also introduced a smaller 16 valve 107 horsepower version for the more economically or ecologically minded buyer of the Xedos. Mazda also took the opportunity to re-design the aesthetic stylings of the car in order to attract a new market of customers. When sold in Japan the Mazda Xedos was rebadged as the Eunos 500. Mazda also introduced a larger version known as the Xedos 9 that was in direct competition with the popular BMW 5 Series of cars. Neither model of the Xedos sold very well at all despite Mazdas attempts to redesign and reinvent the vehicle on multiple occassions. The vehicle was eventually discontinued in 2000.
