The Mazda Xedos were created in 1992 to serve as a unique executive vehicle. The first version was designed as a direct competitor to the ever popular 3 series BMW; it was similar in size and in engine capacity to the competition.

There were two different types of engine available to power the Mazda Xedos, a 24 valve V6 that could output 144 horsepower and also a much smaller 16 valve 107 horsepower version. By 1994 Mazda opted to redesign the Xedos slightly to make it more ecologically sound, they also took this opportunity to restyle the exterior of the vehicle. In Japan the Mazda Xedos was sold as the Eunos 500, it was never offered for sale in America.

The much larder Xedos 9 was also released by Mazda in 1994, similar in size and engine capacity to the BMW 5 Series. The Xedos did not sell well despite another re-design in 1998 that modernised the vehicle for the new millenium. Mazda stopped producing the vehicle in 2000.
