Mazda RX-7 Waterproof Half Covers

mazdarx-71.jpgWhilst two other vehicles from the RX series were the main focus of Mazda throughout the 1970's the RX-7 was in development for many years and was first released in 1978, to only be discontinued in 2002 after an impressive production run. When it was first released the Mazda RX-7 was powered by a twin rotor version of the Wankel rotary engine and it also featured a rear wheel drive system. It was intended to replace the RX-3 that was nearing retirement, and after the RX-7 was released by Mazda the company began to phase out all other rotary engined cars leaving the Wankel rotary powereplant the sole domain of the RX series, with the exception of the Cosmo for a short time.

One of the unique features about the RX-7 was that Mazda created what has become known as a "front mid engine" system, the rotary engine is so small and light that it can be moved to sit just behind the front axle allowing the vehicle to achieve similar results as though the engine were actually mounted in the middle of the car. The RX-7 was sold by Mazda as both a standard two seat sports model and a two plus two seating vehicle. Unfortunately space in the rear was not exceptional so Mazda described the rear sets as suitable for occasional use only and left them to be installed by dealers rather than at the factory.

Whilst it was in production the Mazda RX-7 went on to become the pride and joy of many motorists and it received excellent reviews from almost all aspects of the industry. It made the Car and Driver magazine top 10 list five times and more favourable reviews resulted in Mazda selling over 800,000 RX-7 vehicles eventually. The vehicle also depreciated remarkably well; anecdotal evidence suggests that one RX-7 actually held 90% of its purchase price when sold on three years later. Many praised the handling of the vehicle and congratulated Mazda on producing such a high performing, reliable and affordable car. Throughout its life Mazda redesigned and restyled the RX-7 three times, with each version incorporating new technologies and being updated for a more modern customer. There were also numerous "sports" versions of the Mazda RX-7 that removed all non essential items to save weight.
