mazdarx-71.jpgThe Mazda RX-7 is a vehicle that was designed and developed in the latter half of the 1970's and it was first offered for sale in 1978. The Mazda RX-7 continued to be sold through until 2002 and it proved especially popular thanks to its unique twin rotor Wankel powerplant and rear wheel drive. The RX-7 is a direct replacement of the RX-3 and it continues the same tradition and lineage, it is easy to follow a common path of design and engineering from the RX-3 to the RX-7. Eventually Mazda decided to drop all of their rotary engined vehicles apart from those in the RX series leaving the RX-7 the only rotary powered Mazda vehicle in creation apart from the final model of Cosmo for a short time. One of the main selling points of the Mazda RX-7 was the engine mounting; it is situated behind the front axle offering excellent almost mid-engined handling.

The RX-7 was offered for sale as a standard 2 seater or also as a unique 2+2 vehicle. Since there was not much room for back seats they were often described as "occasional seating" and were offering as dealer extras rather than factory fitted items. Mazda won many awards for this vehicle throughout its production run. It entered the Car and Driver "top 10 best vehicles" list five times and Mazda reported that they have sold over 800,000 RX-7 type cars. Offering competitive fuel economy and excellent performance at a seemingly budget price it is no wonder that many people hold the Mazda RX-7 in a special place in their motoring memories. Another advantage of the Mazda RX-7 was that the vehicles did not depreciate very badly at all, in fact one particular experiment demonstrated that if kept in good condition one could hold over 90% of their purchase price.

The features, fittings, engineering and technology of the Mazda RX-7 all combined to produce a vehicle that could compete with much more expensive and powerful cars, and Mazda went one step further by offering a tremendously large amount of optional extras available for customers to help them customise their RX-7 to their hearts content when placing an order. Extras varied from internal comforts and luxuries through to fuel injection and turbochargers on the engines. Throughout its lifetime the Mazda RX-7 has been released in three distinct variations, with a number of changes and improvements marking each version apart.
