mazdarx-71.jpgThe Mazda RX-7 was developed throughout the 1970's and released for sale between the years of 1978 and 2002. Initially the Mazda RX-7 was powered by a twin rotor Wankel engine connected to a rear wheel drive system and the vehicle served as a direct replacement for the RX-3 that was discontinued when Mazda introduced the RX-7. Gradually all other rotary engined vehicles from Mazda were dropped leaving the RX-7 to carry the rotary torch with the exception of the Cosmo for a time. Initially the RX-7 was a sports coupe with a setup known as "front mid engine" with the Wankel rotary system sitting just behind the front axle. Sold as a two seat or 2+2 coupe in various markets the rear seats were described as "occasional" and seen as an optional extra installed by dealers in the US.

The RX-7 picked up a string of accolades for Mazda throughout its life, in fact it made the Car and Driver top 10 best lists five times, and over 800,000 vehicles wearing the Mazda RX-7 badge were sold. When the RX-7 G from 1984 was tested it was revealed that fuel consumption sat at 29 mpg and 0 to 50 mph speed was revealed by Mazda to be 6.3 seconds. One of the major factors that people considered when purchasing a Mazda RX-7 was depreciation; many of them held over 90% of their original purchase price when sold three years later. The handling and performance of the vehicle were particularly praised, they were so good that the RX-7 could actually compete with much higher performance sports cars from European manufacturers. There were a large number of options and extras available from Mazda when purchasing, they varied from region to region but generally one could customise quite a large amount of the vehicle when placing an order.

The US version also saw some other extras such as a choice of fuel injection and turbocharged engines. There were actually three versions of the RX-7, with Mazda choosing to restyle the vehicle completely for the second revision basing their designs on the Porsche 924 and 944. A small number were released as "sports" models that featured no power steering and reduced weight thanks to the removal of luxuries such as powered windows. Various "stripped" versions of the RX-7 were produced throughout the vehicles life in an attempt to reduce the weight of the vehicle as much as possible in an effort to increase performance. Both the second and third generations of the Mazda RX-7 took a number of awards with many publications awarded it the much sought after title of "car of the year". One popular gentlemans publication actually referred to the RX-7 as better than the Dodge Viper when both vehicles were reviewed side by side in the same issue.
