Mazda RX-4 Waterproof Half Covers
The Mazda Luce Rotary (or the RX-4 as it became more commonly known) was a vehicle marketed and sold throughout the 1970's and it represented a u-turn in rotary engined design for Mazda, rather than mating the Wankel rotary engine to a smaller sportier car they chose to make the RX-4 a much larger vehicle aimed at families and buisnesspeople. Originally the Mazda RX-4 was designed around the existing chassis taken from the Luce/929 vehicles but it was in fact a very distinct and seperate vehicle that eventually overtook its standard engined rival in sales. One of the main reasons for its success was that the RX-4 was offered for sale in the US unlike various other models of Luce and R130 ensuring the vehicle had a firm following.
Mazda took a long time to carefully market their new vehicle, for the Mazda RX-4 they chose to highlight how refined and elegant the vehicle was whilst still being very sporty in the handling and performance department. The Mazda RX-4 represented a solution that offered both sports car like performance and luxurious fittings at an affordable price, and as with all of their vehicles Mazda did not cut any corners in the design and manufacturing of the RX-4. Initially the RX-4 was available as a hardtop coupe and also as a sedan but due to popular demand Mazda released a station wagon in 1973 after they retired the Savanna Wagon.
The RX-4 was powered by the 12A engine and it was capable of 130 hp, however Mazda soon replaced this with the 13B rotary engine that took a step down the horsepower scale to 125, however it proved much more economical and also allowed the Mazda RX-4 to comply with emissions and pollution regulations across the globe. The RX-4 was selling so well that Mazda took the step to redesign the vehicle in 1976 in order to make it competitive with more recently released cars from other companies.
