Mazda RX-3 Waterproof Half Covers

mazdarx-31.jpgThroughout the duration of the 1970's the Mazda RX-3 represented the pinnacle of affordable sports car design and was unique in its choice of a rotary engine as with all cars in the RX series. Initially the Mazda RX-3 was designed to function as a sportier alternative to the family oriented RX-2 and Capella and many hail the Mazda RX-3 as the car that really kick started the current line of sporty RX vehicles including the modern RX-8 and future RX-9. The basis for the Mazda RX-3 was actually a very heavily modified Familia and in Japan the car was sold under the name "Savanna".

As with all vehicles in the Mazda RX series the RX-3 utilised a Wankel rotary engine, in this case a 10A version, however the US version of the car utilised the heavier and more powerful 12A engine that was taken straight from the RX-2. This did not actually improve performance at all and if anything actually hindered handling slightly; the 10A powered model was faster, better accelerating and handled better according to many popular reviews. Like many cars produced by Mazda the RX-3 has a strong racing heritage, with the Cosmo and Familia both cutting their teeth on the race track it was only logical that Mazda enter the RX-3 into the Japanese Grand Prix in 1972.

The Mazda RX-3 went on to perform exceptionally well at races across the globe, it is recorded in the annals of motoring history that in 1976 the RX-3 actually won over 100 races for Mazda and to this day the occasional RX-3 pops up at a racing club or track meet. The Mazda RX-3 also sold very well in Australia and was popular as a racing car there; the vehicle took fifth and first in the Bathurst 1000 across two consecutive years.
