Mazda RX-3 Heavy Duty Waterproof Car Covers
The Mazda RX-3 was sold throughout the 1970's and was designed from the outset to serve as a sports based alternative to the existing RX-2 or Capella vehicles. From 1971 through to 1978 the Mazda RX-3 sold well and it is often seen as an iconic design that paved the way for modern classics such as the RX-8 and forthcoming RX-9. The Mazda Familia served as the basis for the RX-3 and it was marketed in its home market of Japan as the Savanna.
Like the R100 the RX-3 was powered by the Mazda 10A rotary engine but the vehicles produced for the US market used the larger 12A engine taken directly from the RX-2. The Mazda RX-3 also has a strong racing history; after the Cosmo and Familia it certainly lived up to expectations by taking victory in the touring cars category in the Japanese Grand Prix in 1972. The RX-3 went on to claim a whole string of victories, in fact in 1976 the Mazda RX-3 took over 100 victories and many are seen racing in clubs and at meets to this day.
When Mazda marketed this vehicle in Australia it also sold incredibly well and took part in many racing events; the 1975 Bathurst 1000 saw the Mazda RX-3 place fifth overall and first in its own class for a second year after it took a class win in 1974. 1972 saw some redesigns of the RX-3, the US and other markets had the more powerful 12A rotary engine that actually hampered performance due to its extra weight. There were a variety of upgrades of the Mazda RX-3 throughout its life as new technologies and innovations were made available to the automotive industry. Various engine modifications were applied to the vehicle in order to improve performance and fuel economy and the vehicle is still sought after by collectors today.
