Mazda RX-2 Waterproof Half Covers
The Mazda RX-2 was first released in 1970 and it continued through until 1978 when it was discontinued. The rotary engined RX-2 set a standard for future rotary powered vehicles of the RX class produced by Mazda and helped pave the way for all of the vehicles that would follow. The chassis of the Mazda RX-2 was taken from the Mazda Capella 616 and 618 series of cars that normally featured a standard engine. When it was first designed Mazda hoped to market the RX-2 as an upgrade package that could be purchased and applied to the regular Capella, in effect making it unique in that it was a rotary engined car aimed at families. Mazda did not start a sporting lineage with the RX-2, rather than honour would be left to the RX-3 that followed.
For four years the Mazda RX-2 graced the worlds roads before it was overhauled and upgraded in 1974 to bring it more in line with competing vehicles from other companies. The extra power and lighter weight of the Wankel rotary engine ensured that the vehicles were immediate successes as Mazda were able to market them at a lower price than one might expect. The 1974 revision of the RX-2 featured a more powerful engine although this was not initially advertised. The RX-2 helped break Mazda into the United States and make the company a household name thanks to a careful distribution strategy that started along the West Coast and gradually spread eastwards. Mazda had to reduce the power of the rotary engine that powered the RX-2 to comply with US vehicle emissions regulations but the car still sold exceedingly well.
A number of automotive magazines and reviewers rewarded the vehicle with glowing references despite a number of problems that plagued the Mazda RX-2 throughout its life. The worst and most irritating problem that the RX-2 suffered was the gradual decaying of the oil seals that at first resulted in excessive oil consumption but could end up making exhaust emissions very dirty indeed. Mazda rectified this as a warranty repair at their own expense initially, and later when they launched a brand new redesigned set of seals they offered to fit them to older RX-2 cars at a cost. Sadly this meant that many owners abandoned their Mazda rather than pay the price for the new seal fittings and this has resulted in the original Mazda RX-2 being something of a rare vehicle and a collectors item.
