Mazda RX-2 Lightweight Breathable Car Covers
The Mazda RX-2 was produced between 1970 and 1978 until it was finally discontinued, and it is the vehicle responsible for properly launching the the popular rotary engined RX series. The RX-2 of course was powered by a Mazda designed rotary engine and the car itself utilised the same chassis as is used on the pisto powered Capella 616 and Capella 618. Originally Mazda created the RX-2 as an optional package that could be "added" to the Capella however it proved popular so the modified RX-2 vehicle was sold on its own shortly after it was released. Mazda developed the car to fit into the "family car" market, albeit with a rotary engine to provide extra reliability and power.
Since the later RX-3 was already in pre-planning and was designed as a sports car the Mazda RX-2 could continue to work its way into the family car niche unhindered. In 1974 a major upgrade of the Mazda RX-2 was undertaken, the newer version of the car was modified and tweaked so that the engine produced more power; in effect creating a vehicle that was outperforming its straight engined rivals. Alongside the R100 the
RX-2 holds the accolade of being one of the vehicles that broke Mazda
into the United States even though the cars were originally only sold in the Western reaches of the country. Strict US vehicle emissions rules forced Mazda to limit the RX-2 engine
output to 120 bhp and adding 1.3 seconds to the 0-60 mph time. Even though the US market effectively received a down-tuned version of the RX-2 they still bought it in droves and a number of positive reviews helped the vehicle continue to sell well. Sadly there were a small number of issues with the new engine; one of the main ones concerned the oil seals. They would gradually erode resulting in
excessive consumption of oil and dirty exhaust emissions, not something that enamoured the car to many owners. Fortunately Mazda opted to repair most affected cars under warranty and they later went on to offer a new set of
seals that were completely new with the fault fixed, albeit at cost to the car
owner. This problem resulted in many scrapping their cars rather than paying to have them repaired resulting in the car being something of a rare collectors item today.
