Mazda RX-2 Heavy Duty Waterproof Car Covers

mazdarx-21.jpgMazda introduced the RX-2 vehicle in 1970 and it served well until 1978 when it was discontinued. Like all RX series vehicles the Mazda RX-2 utilised a rotary engine and uniquely this vehicle also shared the same chassis with the piston engined Mazda Capella 616/618. Initially the Mazda RX-2 was considered to be an optional package that could be added to the standard Capella for those who were interested in various changes along with the addition of the rotary engine. This led to many early vehicles that would later become the Mazda RX-2 being badged as the "Capella RE" instead. Mazda envisioned the RX-2 as a family car that would use the rotary engine, hoping to use the RX-3 to represent their sporty aspirations by making it a smaller coupe vehicle.

The first version of the Mazda RX-2 served for four years through until it was upgraded in 1974. The higher power and performance of the Wankel rotary 12A engine ensured that they were an immediate success as they offered much better performance than similarly priced straight engined vehicles of the same class. The 1974 second version of the Mazda RX-2 featured a slightly more powerful engine even though this change was not advertised and henceforth not discovered in various markets. The RX-2 holds the accolade of being one of the vehicles that broke Mazda into the United States alongside the R100. Whilst initially they were only distributed along the West Coast they were later sold country wide and proved to be a major success. Unfortunately strict US regulations regarding vehicle emissions forced Mazda to limit the RX-2 engine output to 120 horsepower and adding 1.3 seconds to the 0-60 mph time.

Despite these changes the vehicle was received enthusiastically in the United States and several excellent reviews helped bolster sales. The Mazda RX-2 did suffer from a number of problems throughout its life, the worst of which involved the oil seals gradually eroding resulting in excessive consumption of oil and dirty exhaust emissions. Mazda chose to fix may vehicles under warranty and later offering a newer set of seals that were completely re-designed, albeit at cost to the car owner. Many RX-2 owners chose to abandon their vehicles instead rather than pay the price to have their engines upgraded resulting in the vehicles becoming increasingly rarer and making them something of a modern collectors item.
