Mazda R100 Waterproof Half Covers
The Mazda R100 is not a very widely recognised and known vehicle, in fact many will have never heard of it before. The Mazda R100 actually used the chassis and bodywork from the Familia vehicle and then threw away the engine and replaced it with a rotary powerplant much like the one used in the Cosmo Sport at the time. The Mazda R100 was imported to the US market by the brand new "Mazda Motors Of America" and only sold for a short time (between 1971 and 1972) and it is still held in high regard by many motorists who look back and remember it with fondness.
When it was first released the R100 only sold at a very slow yet steady pace, this was quickly rectified by a marketing campaign that covered the entire country and some positive reviews soon helped bolster the reputation of the Mazda R100. The slow but steady trickle of orders soon turned into a vast amount with the company rushing to meet demand. The Mazda R100 is also remembered by many thanks to its history as a racing vehicle; thanks to the success of the Cosmo Sports at the Nurburgring in 1968 Mazda recognised that racing could help raise the profile of the car and henceforth the R100 became a racing car as well.
The Mazda R100 actually performed very well at the various racing meets and events that it attended, it took victory at the Singapore Grand Prix in 1969 and the R100 was also taken to the Spa 24 Hours challenge trophy and the two entered R100's actually placed fifth and sixth behind two pairs of Porsche 911's. Mazda also entered the car to take place in the Marathon de la Route in 1969 and they took fifth, and then went on to take the leader spot in the All Japan Grand Cup. Further victories followed at the RAC Tourist Trophy, West German Touring Car championship and the next years Spa 24 Hours.
