The Mazda R100 is not a commonly known vehicle; it is often forgotten about due to the fact that it was only offered for sale between 1971 and 1972. The Mazda R100 used the popular Familia for its basis by using the chassis directly from the existing vehicle. This was mated to a Wankel rotary engine taken from the second version of the Cosmo Sport and a brand new vehicle was created. In the short time it was offered for sale in the US the Mazda R100 actually made a large impression on the minds of many once it was established and it is remembered with fondness by many.
After the Mazda R100 was first launched sales proceeded to trickle in but nothing substantial occurred, Mazda took the bull by the horns and proceeded to heavily market the R100 and as you might imagine it suddenly began to sell much more rapidly. The Mazda R100 proved popular with amateur racing teams and Mazda capitalised on this by entering the R100 in various races after seeing how well the company had fared with the Cosmo Sports after that was raced at the Nurburgring.
Entering the R100 for a variety of races proved to be an excellent idea by Mazda; the first victory for the car came at the Singapore grand prix in April of 1969. This fuelled the desire of Mazda to properly demonstrate that the R100 is capable of being used as a true racing vehicle so they took the R100 Familia to the Spa 24
Hours challenge and placed fifth and sixth, coming behind four Porsche
911's. They also came in a suitably impressive fifth place at the Marathon de la Route in 1969,
and scooped the leader position in the All Japan Grand Cup. The R100 went on to
a whole host of other racing successes such as the RAC Tourist Trophy in 1970,
fourth at the West German Touring Car championship, and fifth at the
next Spa 24 Hours in 1970.
