The Mazda R100 is one of the lesser known vehicles produced by the company, it actually utilised the chassis from the Familia and mated it with a rotary engine very similar to the one used to power the second series of the Cosmo Sport. The Mazda R100 was one of the first vehicles to be imported for sale in the US market by the newly formed "Mazda Motors Of America". The R100 actually only sold between the years of 1971 and 1972 but in this short time it made a strong impression on the American market and remains a vehicle that is still held in very high regard by many to this day.
Initially sales were slow and limited to the south-western regions of the country but once a steady marketing campaign was established and reviews were publised about the R100 Mazda saw sales begin to come in, at first a trickle, and then a torrent cementing the cars success in automotive history. The Mazda R100 also has something of a racing lineage; Mazda noted how well the previous success of the Cosmo Sports in 1968 at the Nurburgring had helped sales of the car and raised awareness of rotary engines so they decided to race a new rotary engined vehicle.
The R100 Familia was the vehicle that was chosen and it took its first victory for Mazda at the Singapore grand prix in April of 1969. Not content with a single victory Mazda took the R100 Familia to the Spa 24 Hours challenge and placed fifth and sixth, coming behind four Porsche 911's. They also took fifth place at the Marathon de la Route in 1969, and first place in the All Japan Grand Cup. The R100 Familia went to to other successes for Mazda such as the RAC Tourist Trophy in 1970, fourth at the West German Touring Car championship, and fifth at the next Spa 24 Hours in 1970.
