mazdamx-51.jpgThe Mazda MX-5 is a vehicle that is constantly going from strength to strength and it has proven a vital milestone on the automotive road; it helped Mazda break into a market with an affordable car that was previously the reserve of higher end expensive cars from manufacturers like Porsche. The MX-5 has created a whole new niche for affordable small convertible cars that allowed many other companies to follow with their own alternatives, many of which do not measure up to the original MX-5 or sell anywhere near as well. The Mazda MX-5 is produced at the companies Hiroshima plant and it was first released to an eager crowd of press and members of the public in 1989 and throughout its life it has seen three upgrades creating three different versions of the vehicle.

The Mazda MX-5 continues to sell very well to this day and is showing no signs of waning yet; it has become one of the flagship vehicles of Mazda and is the car most often associated with the company. It is also known as the Miata or the Roadster in various international markets and over 400,000 of the first generation MX-5's have been sold since 1989. The original 1.6 straight 4 engine was quickly deemed underpowered and replaced with a 1.8 litre version; and when the second generation of the Mazda MX-5 was produced that was increased again to 2.0 litres along with various other styling changes such as the deletion of the pop up headlights. The third generation MX-5 kept the Mazda 2.0 litre engine but utilised a variety of new technologies and styling changes to again bring the car up to date.

The Mazda MX-5 was created with the goal in mind of duplicating the classic lines and excitement of various 1960's British roadsters such as the Elan, Sprite and Spitfire. Coupled with this mission statement Mazda utilised the latest techologies and design skills in an effort to produce a modern roadster that was a spiritiual ancestor of these classic 1960's designs. Available with a choice of either manual or automatic transmission and featuring excellent handling thanks to independent double wishbone suspension placed the MX-5 firmly in modern times as an updated version of the older roadsters. The original Mazda MX-5 weighed just over a ton however  the inclusion of new technologies and optional extras has actually made the vehicle heavier with each generation, to compensate for this engine power has been gradually increased throughout the life of the vehicle.
