The Mazda MX-5 is, at this particular moment in time, one of the most famous of all vehicles produced by Mazda and the MX-5 also holds the accolade of being the vehicle that re-launched small convertible vehicles to a marketplace previously occupied by high end, expensive vehicles from companies such as Porsche. The Mazda MX-5 is a unique, affordable two seated roadster that is produced by Mazda at their facilities in Hiroshima, Japan. The MX-5 was first introduced in 1989 and has been upgraded three times forming three distinct generations. It is showing no signs of flagging and has become something of an iconic image for the Mazda brand. The MX-5 is referred to as the Miata in North America and the Roadster in Japan and the first generation vehicle shipped over 400,000 vehicles from when it was first introduced in 1989 to when it was replaced by an upgraded model in 1997.
Initially the Mazda MX-5 featured a 1.6 straight 4 engine that was later replaced with a more powerful 1.8 litre model. Engine power was increased further for the second generation to 2.0 litres and the pop up headlights were replaced with fixed versions. The most recent version kept the 2.0 litre engine but introduced a number of technology innovations and styling changes to bring the Mazda MX-5 up to date. Initially the Mazda MX-5 was designed to resemble the classic British roadsters that were so popular throughout the 1960's such as the Spitfire, Elan, Midget and Sprite. This design philosophy was coupled with a desire to produce an innovate and technologically up to date vehicle that would serve as a spiritiual ancestor of these classic 1960's designs. The traditional use of a front engine, rear wheel drive setup with independent double wishbone suspension is one of the most loved features of the Mazda MX-5, it makes the vehicle responsive and driveable and provides excellent feedback to the drivers fingertips.
The Mazda MX-5 is available as both a manual and automatic depending on the customers requirements. The light body also adds to the handling capabilities of the MX-5 and Mazda have chosen to incorporate a "powerplant frame" that connects the engine to the differential, this also helps make the handling so responsive and tactile. Many Mazda MX-5 vehicles also feature a limited slip differential and anti-locking brakes, and traction control is available as an option on some models of the car. Whilst the earlier Mazda MX-5 weighed a little over a ton the inclusion of new technologies and innovations has actually made the vehicle heavier with each generation; this is why engine power has been gradually increased throughout the life of the vehicle.
