The unique 2+2 seat Mazda MX-3 was a sporty hatchback sold between 1991 and 1998 and based around the ever popular EC platform. Whilst it is most commonly referred to as the MX-3 in some areas Mazda chose to release it as the Precidia and the Eunos in some Australian territories. When it was first released the Mazda MX-3 proved to be incredibly popular and is now a collectors item as many consider it a true piece of automotive history thanks to its unique design that allowed for major modifications to be undertaken with very little formal skill or training. The Mazda MX-3 also featured the lowest capacity V6 engine ever at the time it was created, the small 1.8 unit was surprisingly powerful and sold well.
The V6 1.8 litre powerplant was not the only engine available for the Mazda MX-3, 1.5 litre and 1.6 litre models were also available for those more interested in fuel economy. One of the reasons the Mazda MX-3 sold so well was that it outperformed almost every vehicle in its class in many tests, even vehicles that were supposedly better when comparing their vital statistics. This placed the Mazda MX-3 firmly in the category of "ahead of its time" thanks to a unique fusion of engineering excellence and aesthetic style. The V6 powered version proved suitably fast and agile with smooth performance and very few problems.
Road handling on the Mazda MX-3 was excellent thanks to its twin trapezoidal link holding the rear suspension, this unique system allowed the rear wheels of the car to tilt when cornering in order to increase grip and stability. At the time of its first use on the Mazda MX-3 it was a new idea but it has since proved so popular that it has been used on a wide number of other vehicles from the company. Both Mazda USA and Mazda Canada developed special edition vehicles as well, with only 2000 of these custom cars being produced. These unique editions of the Mazda MX-3 featured things such as a unique leather interior, more powerful engines, larger wheels, and various luxuries such as heated seats and special finishes and paint schemes.
