The Mazda MX-3 was a leading hatchback featuring 2+2 seating produced between the years of 1991 and 1998. The MX-3 was designed with the EC platform in mind and it was sold by Mazda as the Precidia in a number of export markets including Canada, and it was also sold as the Eunos in Australia. The Mazda MX-3 is something of a collectors item due to their popularity with those who specialise in third party modifications, in fact everything including the entire engine can be replaced with relative ease. Mazda also took the accolade of producing in the MX-3 a car that featured the lowest displacement V6 engine ever at just 1.8 litres.
Initially a number of different engines were available on the Mazda MX-3, from a 1.5 litre to a 1.6 litre to the 1.8 litre V6. In almost all models the handling characteristics and performance placed the MX-3 way ahead of the curve; it out performed almost every other vehicle in its class and many others that supposedly outclassed it on paper. For the time in which it was created the MX-3 was ahead of its time, packing the latest innovations in engineering and other disciplines into its design. The V6 engine proved to be equally impressive and became the basis for later versions of the K series engine used in Mazda vehicles for years to come. The MX-3 K series engine was designed from the outset to be the perfect blend of durability, smoothness and performance.
The Mazda MX-3 also made use of a unique twin trapezoidal link that held together the rear suspension; it allows the rear wheels to tilt when turning in order to improve road handling. Since the Mazda MX-3 this system has been used on a wide number of vehicles from the company and it has been well received. Mazda produced a special limited edition of the MX-3 in 1993 in order to celebrate their 25th year producing vehicles in Canada. Mazda USA also offered a special edition and only 2000 of these unique vehicles were produced making them exceptionally sought after. These editions featured a full leather interior, the V6 engine, heated seats, larger 15 inch wheels, and some special colour schemes. Mazda Europe also produced 100 limited edition "SE" versions of the MX-3 that were clear white in colour and featured a mixed leather and suede interior.
