From 1969 through to 1990 the Mazda Luce proved to be an excellent vehicle that sold well for Mazda until it was eventually replaced by the Sentia after being discontinued. Whilst the Luce name may not be immediately obvious if we refer to is as the Cosmo, RX-4 or the 929 it may be more immediately obvious. The initial Mazda Luce was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro; this 1500 series proved to be a breathtaking vehicle with a unique design that helped put Mazda on the map and establish them as players on the world stage. The shape was kept completely unchanged for the launch of the vehicle in 1969 minus a few small changes to the roof area.
The 1.5 litre engine that powered the Mazda Luce developed 78 horsepower and although when it was first released it was overpriced and did not sell very well. Mazda took the step to introduce the Luce 1800 that was powered by a bigger 1.8 litre engine; this made the final package much better value for money and it went on to sell relatively well. As with most Mazda vehicles a rotary engine was also introduced for the Luce and the R130 was the result of this synergy, this 126 horsepower 1.3 litre engine was available between the years of 1969 and 1972. Due to its rarity and durability it is actually considered a rare collectors piece and is much sought after.
The Mazda Luce helped awareness of the company soar in the United States, it was an incredibly export success and set records for sales at the time. Ironically certain Luce models did not sell well in limited areas of the globe, the Mazda Luce 1800 did not do well in the US for example, but it sold very well in Europe. In 1977 Mazda introduced the Luce Legato that took the vehicle up a few metaphorical notches thanks to increased luxury and refinement. 1980 saw Mazda restyle the original design to bring it more in keeping with modern vehicles, and in 1986 the new Mazda Luce was designed on the HC platform and was made available with a choice of a turbo engine.
