mazdafamilia1.jpgA Mazda Familia in one shape or another has been in production with the company from 1964 until 2003 with a tremendous number of different types of car all being sold under the Mazda Familia name. Many of the Mazda Familia type vehicles have been smaller family oriented vehicles or compact cars that have gone on to sell exceptionally well. The initial model of the Familia was marketed abroad by Mazda as the 323, GLC or Protege, and for a short time it was also referred to as the Etude. The Mazda Familia also served as the premise upon which both the Ford Laser and Ford Meteor were based along with the Escort and the Tracer. The Familia also holds the accolade of being produced in almost every corner of the globe with Mazda constructing it everywhere from Japan to Taiwan to Malaysia to South Africa to New Zealand.

The Mazda Familia was finally replaced with a new vehicle in 2004 when the Axela was introduced, however it left behind a strong lineage and history and it has certainly made its mark on the history of Mazda. The first Familia that was introduced in 1964 was a very varied vehicle, available as a sedan, standard car and also a van, however it proved underpowered so its engine was quickly improved. The Mazda 1000 was the next vehicle to bear the Familia name; from 1967 this vehicle graced our streets and although it offered no real improvements or innovations it sold relatively well. Mazda fixed the problems of the 1000 with the 1200 Familia, a newever vehicle powered by a larger engine with a capacity of 1169 cc. The 1300 Familia was quick to follow on its footsteps and this continued through until 1973 when Mazda replaced it with the Mazda Preso Familia that once again upped the engine capacity. This car was exported as the 808 and 818 and evolved into the rotary powered RX-3.

One of the most popular and widely recognised versions of the Familia is the Mazda GLC (Great Little Car) that was first unveiled in 1977 and held the accolade of being the smallest rear wheel driven compact car on the market at the time. Like many vehicles from Mazda the GLC Familia was notable in that it came with a huge amount of accessories as standard and also offered the customer a tremendous amount of variety as far as customisation options go when purchasing. 1999 saw the reinvention of the Mazda Familia franchise with a new vehicle that came in many shapes and sizes; from a five door station wagon to a 3 door hatchback. The new Mazda Familia was updated in 2001 in order to make it more in keeping with modern vehicles, this upgrade tweaked the suspension and also included a whole host of new technologies integrated into the vehicle.
