mazdafamilia1.jpgThe Mazda Familia is a name that has been used for a wide variety of cars from the company. Many of the Mazda Familia vehicles have been small family cars or compacts and there has been a Familia in production from 1964 through to 2003 in one guise or another. Mazda produced this vehicle for export where it was known as the 323, or the GLC or Protege in the US. It was also known as the Etude for a time and the Mazda Familia also served as the basis from which the Ford Laser and Meteor were spawned and the Escort and Tracer in the US. The Mazda Familia has also been produced globally having been manufactured in everything from Hiroshima through to Taiwan and Malaysia through to New Zealand and South Africa. When the Mazda Familia line ran its course in 2004 it was replaced with the Axela.

1963 saw the introduction of the first Mazda Familia, it was accompanied by a van version and also a sedan that followed a year later. In 1965 its engine was upgrades from 782 cc to 985 cc providing a much needed boost of power. The next version of the Familia was also known as the Mazda 1000 and was introduced in 1967. Although the engine was marginally more powerful than in the version that had come before it offered no real performance improvements; this was remedied in short order with the 1200 series Mazda Familia that featured a much larger 1169 cc engine. 1970 saw the introduction of the Mazda 1300 Familia, this was quickly replaced with the 1973 Preso Familia that featured an even larger 1272 cc engine from Mazda. This vehicle was sold for export in a number of countries as the 808 and the 818, eventually the top of the range model evolved into what we know as the RX-3.

The beautifully named GLC Mazda Familia (GLC standing for "Great Little Car") was launched in 1977 and for some time was the smallest rear wheel drive compact vehicle. It came with a tremendous number of options and choices varying from number of doors through to body shape and engine size. The most modern version of the Mazda Familia was launched in 1999 and featured a variety of body styles to choose from including a five door station wagon and a sedan along with a 3 door hatchback and more traditional five door version. 1999 also saw some major updates of the BJ platform upon which the Mazda Familia was based; these resulted in the larger 626 vehicles that again featured a tremendous variety of options for the customer to choose from.

The line proved to be very popular and it was updated 2001 with a new styling to bring it into the 21st century. The newer version also featured upgraded suspension and brand new technologies incorporated into the audio system. The vehicle proved so popular that in 2001 Mazda were able to introduce a limited edition Protege version of the Familia that featured a full sports setup with improved suspension and steering, new racing wheels, a boosted engine and a number of factory tweaks that resulted in a sublime vehicle of which only 1500 were ever produced.
