The Mazda 2, 121, Metro, or more appropriately the Demio (also sometimes seen disguising itself as a Ford Festiva Mini Wagon) is a vehicle that was designed and built in the 1980's in order to fulfull the role of a small station wagon or family sized fan. It was not launched until 1996 after spending many years in development, however all of that time was obviously well spent as the Mazda 2 is still in production (a new version was actually released a few years ago) and has proved to be a top seller for Mazda. The company estimate that they have sold roughly 900,000 2 vehicles since they were first released on an unsuspecting public and the car itself has attained something of an iconic status.
Originally the Mazda 2 was designed to a specification produced by Ford and this resulted in the Festiva; the car that would eventually lead to the eventual implementation of what we now know as the DW platformed Mazda 2. The first major update for the car came in 2000 when its external design was brought into the new millenium and some new technologies were implemented in the vehicle interior. This version continued for two years until being updated again in 2002 on the newer DY platform. The most recent version of the Mazda 2 was developed and released in 2007 and went on to become the 7th best selling car in Japan. The Ford Festiva was eventually replaced by the Fiesta in various markets across the world leaving the 2 to fly the flag for Mazda.
One of the main selling points of the Mazda 2 is the tremendous amount of equipment that comes as standard, ABS and EBD are all standard fittings and customers can opt for stability control if they so desire. Mazda have also taken steps to evolve the 2 into a hybrid car that utilises both a standard petrol fuelled piston engine and an electric motor. In the case of the hybrid Mazda 2 the electric motor is used to power the rear wheels in an effort to provide more traction than was available on the regular vehicle. A large variety of different types of engines are also available for the Mazda 2, from a 1.3 litre to a 1.5 litre version that focuses more on power and performance than economy.
