 The Mazda 2 (also known as the Mazda Demio, 121 and the Metro, along with the Ford Festiva Mini Wagon) was designed in the 1980's as a popular small van or station wagon that was first launched in 1996. To this day it is still a very popular vehicle produced by Mazda, the 2 is actually still in production and a new version was launched in 2007 to critical acclaim. It is estimated that almost 900,000 Mazda 2 vehicles have been sold since the vehicle was first introduced in 1996. The 2 was originally produced at the request of Ford who contacted Mazda and asked them to produce a small vehicle for the affordable market.
This union of companies resulted in the Ford Festiva and this was the vehicle that would eventually lead to the production of the Mazda 2. It is based on the DW platform and was updated twice, once in 2000 when new aesthetics were introduced along with some innovations in cabin air filtering and again in 2002 when it was rebuilt on the DY platform. The Mazda 2 proved to be a huge success and is actually the 7th best selling vehicle in Japan, it has proved to be a practical and useful vehicle that scores highly in reviews. When Ford began introducing their Fiesta in Japan the Ford badged versions of the 2 ceased production leaving the vehicle a sole production of Mazda. The number of features included as standard on the Mazda 2 is impressive; all come with ABS and EBD and extra stability control is available as an optional extra.
Mazda also produce a version that is a true hybrid utilising rear wheels powered by an electric motor, this version of the 2 offered increased traction over the standard model. The new Mazda 2 was produced on the DE platform and is powered by a wide choice of engines including a brand new 1.3 and 1.5 litre models that offer excellent economy and power for their size. There is no denying that while small vehicles are only just becoming more popular again thanks to the environmental movement making people more aware of their impact on the environment and also thanks to the global financial crisis the Mazda 2 has always been considered an excellent car and has always been in possession of a "wow" factor that many other small, affordable vehicles have lacked.
