Mazda Cosmo Waterproof Half Covers

mazdacosmo1.jpgThe Mazda Cosmo is something of an iconic vehicle for the company and there has been a Cosmo in production throughout the majority of the existence of Mazda, many of them serving as flagships and flying the flag for the brand. Every single Mazda Cosmo has been designed from the outset as a GT car and most have used rotary powerplants. The Mazda Cosmo is the car that is responsible for breaking the company into the luxury car market, especially in their native Japan. The Mazda Cosmo was immediately recognised as a iconic design and was something of a luxury "must have item" when sold in various territories across the globe.

The first true Mazda Cosmo evolved from the 110S vehicle, this car has the honour of being the first vehicle produced by Mazda powered by a 2 rotor rotary engine. In 1964 this car was launched to gathered press and members of the public at the prestigious Tokyo Motor Show and a large amount of orders were taken on the day thanks to its innovative stylings and unique engineering. One thing that marked the Mazda Cosmo as unique was that each unit was individually hand produced meaning that only one car could be produced per day making it a luxury commodity and a must have status symbol. Mazda also developed a racing version of the Cosmo in order to demonstrate how reliable both the vehicle itself and the rotary engine could be.

This racing Mazda Cosmo undertook the Marathon de la Route and both cars did well running 4th and 5th throughout the entire race. Unfortunately the trailing car had to drop out but the leading one went on to take 4th place thanks to the reliability of the 110 bhp twin rotor engine. Many owners of the Mazda Cosmo were impressed with how much performance the engine was able to offer considering the vehicle was so affordably priced. In 1968 Mazda unveiled a second version of the Mazda Cosmo with bigger wheels, better brakes, a new 5 speed gearbox and a long wheelbase. In recent years the Mazda Cosmo was still going strong; the latest iteration in the series was released in 1990 and is based on the popular JC platform. It was also powered by a triple rotor engine, something very unique for the time it was released.
