mazdacosmo1.jpgThe Cosmo is a vehicle that has proven to be integral to the very essence of Mazda itself, in fact the Cosmo name has been used a multitude of times on various cars from the company throughout its life. Thus far each and every Cosmo vehicle produced by Mazda has been of the GT variety, almost all of them have been vehicles used to extol the virtues of Wankel rotary engines and to showcase them globally. The Mazda Cosmo has also featured as the leading flagship vehicle used to raise brand awareness for the company; it is most usually a luxury vehicle that has allowed Mazda to tap into a market they were previously not associated with.

The Mazda Cosmo has sold very well considering its status as a luxury vehicle, it's nature as an icon and figurehead can never be denied. The first car to bear the Cosmo legend was the 110S; as the first 2 rotor rotary engine powered car produced by Mazda it holds a special place in automotive history. In 1964 the prototype vehicle garnered the attention of many at the Tokyo Motor Show and various orders were taken on the spot. It was hand built at a rate of one vehicle per day and a racing version of this first Mazda Cosmo was also developed so that the company could demonstrate how reliable a rotary engine can be. Two Mazda Cosmo rotary powered cars were entered in the Marathon de la Route and took fourth and fifth throughout the race, with the leading vehicle continuing to finish and the second dropping out at a late stage.

A two rotor 928 cc engine produced 110 horse power, and a unique ignition system also helped to set aside this first Mazda Cosmo from other vehicles on the market. The fact was that a motorist could purchase the Mazda Cosmo 110 and gain the same performance, economy, and luxury for a cheaper price than many vehicles aimed at the same demographic. The next mark II version of the Cosmo was released by Mazda in the middle of 1968 and it featured many styling and technology improvements that brought the vehicle up to date. Most recently the Cosmo was back in 1990 and based around the Mazda JC platform. It sold as the Eunos and was a top of the range tourer powered by a triple rotor engine.
