mazdacosmo1.jpgThe Mazda Cosmo has existed for many years and been replaced by newer models on many occassions throughout the history of the company. All of the Mazda Cosmo vehicles produced have been GT vehicles and they have often served as something of a flagship model for the companies use of Wankel rotary engines. The Mazda Cosmo served as the flagship vehicle for the company for a number of years and allowed Mazda to break in to the luxury car market in Japan in particular. As a luxury sales commodity the Cosmo sold incredibly well and is seen as something of an iconic vehicle from the company.

The 110S was the first vehicle from Mazda that took on the Cosmo name, it was also the first of the 2 rotor rotary engine powered vehicles produced by the company. The prototype was launched to critical acclaim at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1964 and it proved so successful that a number of pre-orders were taken. The first Mazda Cosmo was actually produced by hand at a rate of a single vehicle per day, something that added to its acclaim as a luxury vehicle. Mazda decided to produce a racing version of the Cosmo in an effort to demonstrate how reliable the rotary engine could be; they undertook the Marathon de la Route at the Nurburgring. The vehicles performed well, driving fourth and fifth throughout the competition. Sadly one of the vehicles was forced to retire in the 82nd hour but the other continued to take fourth place.

The first series of the Mazda Cosmo 110 featured a two rotor 928 cc engine that produced 110 hp. The ignition system was unique in that two spark plugs were provided for each chamber. The vehicle offered similar performance to other luxury vehicles at a cheaper price. July 1968 saw the introduction of the II series version of the Mazda Cosmo. Larger wheels, powered brakes, a 5 speed transmission and longer wheelbase set the car apart from the previous series. It could reach over 120 mph and marked a considerable upgrade from the previous Mazda Cosmo. The most recent version of the Mazda Cosmo was developed in 1990 and based around the JC platform. It was known as the Eunos and represented a top of the range touring car, and it was also the only vehicle that utilised a triple rotor engine. It was packed full of modern technology and luxury fittings and fixtures, and it was only available with a 4 speed automatic gearbox.
