Mazda Capella Waterproof Half Covers
The Mazda Capella is one of the most widely known and recognised vehicles from the manufacturer. As a mid sized family vehicle the Mazda Capella sits neatly into a niche between the bigger Luce and 929 models and the smaller Familia. The Mazda Capella was also sold as the Telstar under the Ford name, and the Capella also saw fame thanks to the Lantis, Cronos, Persona and MX-6, all of which share a common design lineage with this particular Mazda. First introduced in 1970, the Capella was launched to critical acclaim and proved to be a good seller until it was everntually discontinued by Mazda in 2002 to be replaced by the Atenza. Throughout its life there have been numerous different versions of the Mazda Capella, the first version was introduced in 1970 and continued to be produced for four years.
This first iteration of the Mazda Capella was powered by a 4 cyliner 1.6 powerplant that was capable of transmitting 104 horsepower to the drive shaft. If the name Capella does not seem immediately recognisable this may be because it was sold by Mazda as the 616 across various international markets, and the company also produced a rotary version of the Mazda Capella that became known as the RX-2. By 1974 Mazda decided that the Capella was due a redesign to bring it up to date so it could compete with more modern vehicles. This newer version continued for four years until 1978 when it was replaced by a brand new version of the Capella that continued through until 1982 as both sedan and coupe style cars. This vehicle actually became popular in the UK when it was marketed as the Montrose.
1983 saw the introduction of what Mazda considered the third true new version of the Capella, this new car was designed and built around the GC building platform and it was also sold as the Ford Telstar. This was followed in 1987 by a new fourth generation version of the vehicle that was sold until 1996 and proved to be by far the most popular variation of the vehicle. Uniquely Mazda chose to offer a 2.0 litre diesel engine as an option on this version of the Capella, this supercharged Mazda powerplant provided excellent fuel economy and proved very competitive. When this version of the Mazda Capella was replaced in 1994 the new fifth generation version changed from the GC to the CG platform and it did not sell as well as previous versions and only continued in production for three years. 1997 saw the introduction of the final version of the Mazda Capella, four wheel drive was an option from the start and a station wagon version was also available.
