2002 saw the introduction of the Mazda Atenza, a middle sized vehicle that was initially only offered for sale in Japan but later offered for sale in various other regions across the globe as the "6". It is often referred to in Europe and the US as the Mazda Atenza to avoid confusion with various other cars produced by other manufacturers. As a replacement for the Capella the Atenza captured the spirit of the earlier vehicle well and it proved to be a huge success for Mazda, selling in excess of a milllion units worldwide and setting various local sales records across the globe. The Mazda Atenza is also often recognised as the standard bearer for the whole new generation of Mazdas starting with the Atenza and going through the RX series and including the MX-5 and CX-7.
Mazda utilised the Atenza as a racing car; it took first place in the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge Touring Car Series and did much to raise the profile of Mazda as a whole. Although the Atenza was initially offered for sale as a four door sedan or a five door hatchback, and later a five door station wagon version was also offered. There was a tremendous choice of engine sizes and gearboxes offered by Mazda for fitting on the cars, from a three litre V6 right through to a smaller four cylinder turbo-diesel model. There was also an even smaller standard four cylinder version that proved to be especially popular.
In developing the Mazda Atenza the company created the CD3 platform. This has gone on to to serve as the basis for a large number of vehicles
from Ford and other manufacturers. In 2005 with the Atenza still selling very well Mazda decided to re-design the vehicle somewhat to bring it up to date for the new millenium. Various new options were made available for the car and a number of improvments to the external appearence of the Atenza did an excellent job of updating it. Since the original Mazda Atenza was so popular Mazda launched a new second generation version in 2007, and this was quickly followed by a much larger US only model in 2009.
