mazdaatenza1.jpgThe Mazda Atenza is a unique mid sized vehicle that has been in production since 2002. Although it was originally only sold in Japan as the Atenza (Mazda marketed it as simply the "6" elsewhere) it did become known as the Mazda Atenza worldwide to avoid confusion with other vehicles from various other companies. The Mazda Atenza was designed to replace the popular Capella vehicle and since it was first released over a million Atenzas have been sold across the globe, something of a record for this class of vehicle. The Mazda Atenza marked something of a departure from traditional designs and it is seen as one of the vehicles that launched the company into a whole new generation of vehicles. The Mazda Atenza was quickly followed by the 2, the RX-7, the 3 and the 5 along with the MX-5 and CX-7 so it is easy to see the design lineage that it started.

The Atenza also has the honour of representing Mazda in the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge Touring Car Series, propelling the manufacturer to the dizzying heights of first place in the championship standings. The earliest model of the Mazda Atenza was offered in a choice of four door sedan, five door hatchback and a five door station wagon, all available with a variety of different engines and gearboxes. The options on the Mazda Atenza include five speed manual or four speed automatic gearboxes, a 3.0 litre V6 engine, a four cylinder turbo-diesel engine coupled to a six speed gearbox and a standard four cylinder model. The CD3 platform that was developed for the Mazda Atenza has gone on to serve as the basis for a large number of vehicles from Ford including the Fusion.

September 2005 saw the Mazda Atenza given something of a makeover with a variety of added features, new options, alloy wheels and a variety of updates to the aesthetic appearance of the vehicle. The first generation Atenza proved to be so popular that Mazda launched a second generation version in 2007, with a larger US version following in 2009. A choice of 2.5 litre 4 cylinder and 3.7 litre V6 engines make it an option for those who want a sporty car and also those who desire economy over performance. Three body choices are available on the new Atenza, Mazda have created a four door saloon vehicle, along with a five door hatchback and a larger station wagon version. The new vehicle has garned considerable praise from various aspects of the industry and many see it as a serious rival to the ever popular Ford Mondeo.
