Lotus Eleven Waterproof Half Covers

lotuseleven1.jpgThe Lotus Eleven is a well known racing sports car built between 1956 and 1958. Several versions were developed with approximately 270 of the Eleven produced by Lotus. Designed like many of the early Lotus models by Colin Chapman, the Eleven was originally designed to be a track car to compete in the 1100 cc class. Here it was one of the most successful cars of the mid 1950s.

The standard Lotus Eleven is known as the Le Mans, and was designed in conjunction with Frank Costin, a specialist in aerodynamics. This sleek car was fitted with a 1.5 litre Coventry Climax engine that was mounted on the hollow space from of the Eleven. When race ready, they car weighed very little at only 450 kg. Other version included a 1.1 litre and a 1172 cc version with a Ford engine rather than the Climax. In order to meet specifications of the GT, some of the Le Mans models were fitted with a closed body with gulwing doors.

The Eleven holds several records, including the world record for it’s class for the speed during a lap at Monza. Driving a modified Lotus Eleven with a bubble canopy over the cockpit, Sterling Moss reached an impressive 143 mph. This model is certainly the most successful model on the track for Lotus. In 1957 a small number of Lotus Eleven Series 2 models were produced with new suspension and drive chain. Fans referred to these as Lotus 13s, although this was never adopted officially by the company themselves.
