lotuseleven1.jpgThe Eleven is one of Lotus’s most famous racing cars from the 1950’s Produced by Lotus between 1956 and 1958, approximately 270 Eleven model sports cars were released. The car was designed by Colin Chapman as a track car to compete in the 1100 cc class, although with modifications and different engines it did race at other levels. In the 1100 cc class it was one of the most successful cars of the time.

Known as the Le Mans, the standard Lotus Eleven was designed with the aerodynamics specialist Frank Costin. Costin developed the sleek design of the car that led to an amazing performance n the track. Costin also designed the modification to the Eleven that Sterling Moss drove to a world record during a lap at Monza. He added a sleek bubble over the canopy to reduce drag and increase the aerodynamics of the car, allowing Sterling Moss to easily reach the record breaking speeds of 143 mph. For GT racing some Le Mans models of the Eleven were fitted with a closed body with gulwing doors.

The Lotus Eleven was originally developed with a 1.5 litre Coventry Climax engine that gave plenty of power to this very light car; the Eleven weighed in at only 450 kg, following the tradition of Lotus sports cars being developed as lightweight, agile sports cars. For track racing to suit the 1100cc class, the Eleven could be fitted with the Climax 1.1 litre engine or the 1172 cc Ford. As production came to a close in 1957 a small number of new Eleven models were produced by Lotus with new drive chains and suspension. These are known by enthusiasts as the Lotus 13 but this was never recognised by Lotus officially.
